Overall Purpose/Mission

Support development, validation, and dissemination of culture and processes that improve orthopaedic surgical safety and inform Academy policy with regard to these issues.

 

Charges

 

    1. Comply with the strategic plan as adopted by the Board of Directors and ensure that the organization-wide goals of diversity and unity are considered in all activities.
    2. Provide expertise regarding product/drug withdrawals, FDA alerts, CDC reports, etc.
    3. Develop Safety/Communications questions for OITE and SAE.
    4. Write regular Safety/Communication articles for AAOS Now.
    5. Coordinate safety campaigns with the Communications Cabinet and Public Relations.
    6. Contribute to patient oriented material through OrthoInfo.org
    7. Collaborate with BOS/BOC and other AAOS teams to advance quality and safety
    8. Propose new and manage existing Safety Position and Information Statements
    9. Collaborate with the Evidence-based Quality and Value and Performance Measures Committees
    10. Collaborate with other perioperative and safety organizations.
    11. Develop patient safety tools (toolkits, apps, etc.) that aid in establishing a culture of safety.
    12. Develop and maintain a safety curriculum posted online and adaptable to a variety of applications.
